10 Commandments

  1. Attend.
  2. Be curious.
  3. Perform those actions that you wish all others would also perform.
  4. Care for each other. There is a duty of care in all that we do.
  5. Do not lie, do not intentionally mislead
  6. Be generous by default but be firm and steadfast always.
  7. Listen more than you speak.
  8. Hypocrisy is a sign to reevaluate your preconceptions. (see note)
  9. Keep only friends deserving of perfect loyalty and trust, such that failure to provide them with anything except perfect loyalty and trust is a disgrace of the highest order.
  10. Nothing actually matters

Notes

  1. Most broad one, phrased this way instead of the more common “pay attention”, because I like the verb attend and don’t want to think as attention as a commodity that is paid.
  2. Remaining curious always is a good way to achieve many other more specific virtues. Open mindedness is curiosity. Wonder is curiosity.
  3. Deontological ethics, a rephrasing of “do unto others as you would have them do unto you” broadened to include actions which do not involve other people directly.
  4. I probably adapted this from somewhere
  5. I was thinking of the following situation: imagine you see your friend run past you, clearly angry and agitated, shouting at and chasing after a stranger. You haven’t the time to stop and assess the situation, you must act given only the immediate context before you. If you have Good friends and trust them completely, then you should take the side of your friend in this situation and chase after the stranger. Failure to do so would be wicked. Imagine your friend has just been violated, perhaps groped or robbed – you have no way to verify this is/was the case
