Rationality The idea is that more rational people are less relgious. There isn’t much evidence for this.
Mentalizing Idea is that people need to have stable mental models of gods to continuously believe in them, and that one’s capacity to build a mental model for other people is the same skill used to imagine a stable model of a god. Capacity to mentalize has a limited correlation to athiesm, but it’s super weak.
Apathy The idea is that in order to continuously believe in a god or gods, people need motivation to treat them as real. People in precarious situations tend to be more religious (people who experience war or poverty are more likely to be religious). So perhaps people are more likely to be athiests in more apathetic societies.
Credibility A “cred” is a physical act which lends credibility to a narrative. In societies with many displays of religiosity, there is more religious participation. It is the best predictor of secularization. It seems like credibility is the mechanism by which apathy leads to secularization as well.
