Trip To Red Rocks And Nevada Canyons

trip

Preliminary considerations/brainstorming

Travel

  • Flights DFW-LAS arriving Jan 1 and departing Jan 5 are about $150. Cheapest to buy before mid-December.
  • Could rent car for about $180 for four days, possibly cheaper since I’ve only done a surface level search. Got one for < $100 last time I went.
  • Know of a cheap good motel in area for one or two nights if don’t want to camp the whole time.

Weather

Las Vegas during January will have lows of like 35 degrees and highs of like 55 degrees. In my experience it’s mild in winter unless it’s quite windy, which is a possibility. It’s incredibly dry though so if you bundle up against the wind it’s fine.

For climbing this is pretty dang ideal. For canyoneering it’s a little worse because (A) it’s colder in canyons (B) wet canyons are a no go and (C) in winter you could end up with some snow/ice, even in Las Vegas. The risk of snow and ice making canyon conditions substantially more dangerous is far lower in Nevada than in Zion, however, since the elevation is much lower and southern Nevada is warmer than Zion. All things considered, it’s probably one of the best places I know of for winter canyoneering and climbing.

Red Rocks/Climbing

Camping: dispersed camping in Lovell canyon (~45 ish minutes from entrance to park). Red Rock canyon campground in park with camp sites.

Routes: Many fantastic easy multi-pitch routes with easy approaches, could probably get 2 done in a day.

Canyoneering

Online info harder to obtain than for canyons in Utah, but I’m aware of a few with great access and good camping near the start of route. Am obtaining a canyoneering guidebook for southern Nevada which will have better info.

Template of a plan

Total: 4-5 days. Day 1: Fly in, obtain car, obtain food, go to campsite or hotel. Day 2: Climbing day. Day 3: Canyon Day Day 4: Either leave or chill canyon day. Day 5: Fly back
